Senior Nutrition Musts

The human body is constantly changing. With those changes comes the need to be ingesting different nutrients to make sure you stay healthy and fueled. Residents at our Bronx nursing home receive well balanced meals so ensure this proper nutrition.

So, what nutrients are particularly important for seniors? Let’s go over them.

While healthy fats play an important role in everyone's nutritional intake, they can be seen as particularly useful for seniors. What is a healthy fat? Things such as seeds, nuts, and avocados are considered healthy fats. Healthy fats help promote good metabolism, transport vitamins, and protect your vital organs. Saturated fats, on the other hand, should be avoided by all.

Another important nutrient, helpful particularly to seniors, is B-12 vitamins. B-12 helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy. It also helps to make DNA, and prevent megaloblastic anemia. Foods high in B-12 vitamins include shellfish, liver, fish, tofu, and bran cereals. While B-12 is important, those trying to get their fair share should try and to avoid eating too much red meat.

Nutrition is something we take seriously here at Gold Crest Care Center, and we feel strongly that everyone should adopt a well balanced diet to maintain a healthy and happy body.

Recreation at Gold Crest Care Center

Bronx nursing hom

According to the National Council on Aging, research indicates that seniors who stay recreationally engaged can see a delay in the onset of chronic diseases. In addition, by cultivating hobbies and interacting with peers, seniors improve their emotional, spiritual and psychological well-being. This impacts their quality of life, helps them develop lasting relationships and combats loneliness.
This is why residents at Gold Crest Bronx nursing home have their choice of a variety of recreational and community-building activities. With monthly birthday parties, religious services, games, movies, and arts and crafts, our residents can maintain a full and active schedule. Now with the arrival of summer, we’ll be hosting patio barbecues, live entertainment, field trips and more! Many residents invite friends and family to participate in our community events, making each one special.
A variety of our recreational activities a therapeutic focus, to help us treat our residents' physical ailments and combat problems like stress, anxiety and depression. Hand massages are popular among many of our residents. We also offer pet, art and music therapy, as well as sensory stimulation activities intended to boost our residents’ visual, tactile and auditory senses.
Since some of our aging residents need extra help keeping their minds sharp and active, we also offer reality orientation. The objective of this very specialized therapy is to assist those who experience disordered thoughts or who suffer from memory loss. Reality orientation helps participants develop and strengthen the basic mental framework they need to get through daily life. Participants learn how to handle daily routines and maintain behavioral norms, so they can continue to interact with others.
Finally, for those residents who like to maintain a more active day and night life, we offer candle light dinners, exercise activities and dance programs. We have a little something for everyone here at Gold Crest nursing home in NYC, to meet the needs of our diverse and active population of residents.

Health And Keeping A Positive Mindset

One of the most important factors that goes along with successful being has to do with always maintaining a positive mindset. There are a wide variety of different easy therapeutic activities that you can experiment with on a daily basis to always make sure that you're looking on the bright side of life. Our Bronx nursing home recognizes the importance of a good mindset and strives to make sure this is obtainable by all those living with us.

One easy therapeutic activity that you can engage in involves making a list of all the things in your life that you're thankful for. Make a list of all the friends and family members who have always stuck by you through both the good times and the bad. Consider the way you live your life and write down all of the things that make you happy on a daily basis. Whenever you're feeling down or are just in need of a little pick me up, you can always refer back to the list for proof of just how lucky you truly are.

Another easy activity that you can do to get into a positive mindset involves recognizing positive behavior. If you go through your life always giving credit where credit is due, you'll instantly improve your mood as a result. If you go out of your way to smile, say thank you when someone helps you out or always try to be a good listener without being judgmental, for example, those levels of positivity will start to bleed into your mood in a noticeable way. By recognizing all of the positivity around you you'll have an easier time remaining positive yourself.

Another thing that you can do to maintain a positive mindset involves always trying to think positive thoughts about any situation. If you always take situations, even bad ones, and think about them from a positive angle, you'll have an easier time staying in a good mood. Want to learn more about Gold Crest Care Center?
