The human body is constantly changing. With those changes comes the need to be ingesting different nutrients to make sure you stay healthy and fueled. Residents at our Bronx nursing home receive well balanced meals so ensure this proper nutrition.
So, what nutrients are particularly important for seniors? Let’s go over them.
While healthy fats play an important role in everyone's nutritional intake, they can be seen as particularly useful for seniors. What is a healthy fat? Things such as seeds, nuts, and avocados are considered healthy fats. Healthy fats help promote good metabolism, transport vitamins, and protect your vital organs. Saturated fats, on the other hand, should be avoided by all.
Another important nutrient, helpful particularly to seniors, is B-12 vitamins. B-12 helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy. It also helps to make DNA, and prevent megaloblastic anemia. Foods high in B-12 vitamins include shellfish, liver, fish, tofu, and bran cereals. While B-12 is important, those trying to get their fair share should try and to avoid eating too much red meat.
Nutrition is something we take seriously here at Gold Crest Care Center, and we feel strongly that everyone should adopt a well balanced diet to maintain a healthy and happy body.
